Secondary Progressions Basics — What “One Day for One Year” Means

A practical explanation of the day-for-year mapping, progressed planets, the faster symbolic pace of the progressed Moon, and the limits of AstroOne’s current non-public foundation.

Day-for-year is a symbolic time mapping

Secondary progressions use a symbolic mapping in which roughly one day of ephemeris motion after birth represents one year of lived time. A person around age 35 is therefore read through planetary positions roughly 35 days after the birth instant. This does not mean future events literally happened during those first 35 days; it is a conventional symbolic timing model used to describe gradual development.

The progressed Moon and Sun move on different symbolic timescales

Because the natal Moon moves much faster than the Sun, the day-for-year mapping makes the progressed Moon change signs and aspects on a much shorter life timescale than the progressed Sun. Astrologers often use the progressed Moon for changing emotional or situational emphasis over a few years, while the progressed Sun describes a slower developmental arc. Neither should be treated as an automatic event trigger.

The target date still needs a reproducible time convention

A fractional age depends slightly on what clock time represents the requested target date. AstroOne’s current foundation anchors the target date at local noon in the requested timezone, converts that instant to UTC, measures elapsed tropical years, and maps them using a 365.2422-day tropical year. The important quality point is not that noon is the only possible convention, but that the convention is explicit and reproducible.

Progressions and transits answer different timing questions

A transit compares the real current sky with the natal chart; a secondary progression maps days after birth onto years of life. An exact transit can create an hour- or day-level active window, while progressions are generally read as slower developmental context. If both layers emphasize the same natal theme, that may make the theme more useful to investigate, but it still does not turn symbolism into certainty.

AstroOne has a math foundation, not a released progression product

AstroOne has a day-for-year Secondary Progression calculation foundation that requires a reliable birth time and timezone. It can calculate the progressed instant and core positions including the progressed Sun and Moon, but progressed angles and houses are not yet part of the supported calculation and there is no public full progression reading. Treat this guide as methodology education, not as a claim that AstroOne currently offers a complete progression product.
