How a natal chart is calculated

Learn a repeatable path from chart data and components to interpretation, synthesis and timing.

Calculation fact

Step 1 — turn the local clock into a UTC instant

A clock reading such as “10:20” is not a unique world time by itself. Date + local time + timezone are needed to identify the UTC instant. AstroOne does not reinterpret a clock time as UTC when the timezone is missing; it falls back to date-only mode.

AstroOne method

Step 2 — planetary longitudes

The engine interpolates between Swiss-Ephemeris-derived daily samples using both longitude and longitude speed. Each planet output includes 0°–360° longitude, sign, degree within the sign, speed and a retrograde flag.

longitude → sign index = floor(longitude ÷ 30)
Calculation fact

Step 3 — Ascendant and Whole Sign houses

With reliable time, timezone and coordinates, AstroOne computes the Ascendant from UTC Julian day, sidereal-time geometry, obliquity/nutation and the location, selecting the eastern/rising ecliptic intersection. Whole Sign House 1 then begins at 0° of the Ascendant sign.

Step 4 — major natal aspects

For each eligible planet pair, the engine measures the shortest angular distance and compares it with 0/60/90/120/180°. The difference is the orb. If it falls within the configured limit, the aspect is kept and later ranked by tightness.

Limitation

Calculation accuracy ≠ interpretation certainty

A precisely calculated longitude or aspect time does not mean a specific life event is guaranteed. Numerical precision describes the calculation layer; symbolic interpretation still depends on astrological convention and context.

Worked example

Example A through the calculation pipeline

  1. Input

    2000-03-15 10:20 Europe/London, latitude 51.5074, longitude -0.1278.

  2. Calculation

    UTC = 10:20. Sun longitude 355.14139° → Pisces 25.141°. Ascendant 91.124819° → Cancer 1.1248°. Cancer becomes Whole Sign House 1.

  3. Factors to inspect

Sun Pisces House 9 · Moon Cancer House 1 · Mercury/Venus Pisces House 9 conjunction orb 0.389° · Moon square Mars orb 1.085°.

  4. Reasoning

These are calculation outputs, not yet the final meaning. The next lessons add reading order and synthesis.

  5. Synthesis

Keeping data → geometry → placements → aspects in order prevents interpretive assumptions from leaking backward into the calculation layer.

Interpretation

The goal is not to memorize code; it is to understand which outputs require which inputs and where precision can legitimately drop.

Methodology sources

These are the main technical, historical or interpretive references used to verify the lesson. AstroOne behavior is cross-checked separately against the current implementation and verification checks.
