Chart data & the zodiac wheel

Learn a repeatable path from chart data and components to interpretation, synthesis and timing.

Calculation fact

A chart begins with an instant and a place

For planetary positions, the birth date plus a reliable clock time and timezone define a UTC instant. Latitude and longitude are additionally needed for location-sensitive geometry such as the Ascendant and houses.

The zodiac wheel expresses ecliptic longitude from 0° to 360°, divided into twelve 30° tropical signs. A longitude is a calculated position first; it does not carry a “good” or “bad” judgment by itself.

AstroOne method

What AstroOne currently calculates

AstroOne Western Natal uses a Swiss-Ephemeris-derived 24-hour longitude-and-speed grid with cubic Hermite interpolation to obtain geocentric tropical longitudes for the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto at the birth UTC instant.

If reliable birth time or timezone is missing, the engine falls back to a date-only safety mode. It withholds Ascendant and houses and removes the fast Moon and Mercury from natal-aspect eligibility rather than turning missing precision into false certainty.

Interpretive convention

The wheel is a map, not the interpretation

A common Western-astrology convention is to read planets, signs, houses, aspects and axes as different layers of one chart. Calculating where something is located and interpreting what that location may symbolize are separate tasks.

Limitation

What not to do with incomplete birth data

Do not read a Rising sign or houses as exact when the birth clock is uncertain. AstroOne intentionally fails closed on those layers. A date-only chart can still support some planetary-sign context, but fast bodies and angles do not have the same precision.

Worked example

Turning a fictional input into chart facts

We will reuse Example A throughout this course. It is fictional and is not taken from a real user.

  1. Input

    2000-03-15 · 10:20 · Europe/London · London coordinates 51.5074, -0.1278

  2. Calculation

The local clock corresponds to 2000-03-15 10:20 UTC, and the engine calculates planetary longitudes plus Ascendant geometry for that instant and place.

  3. Factors to inspect

Sun 25.14° Pisces · Moon 23.29° Cancer · Ascendant 1.12° Cancer. At this stage, record the facts before jumping to meaning.

  4. Reasoning

Verifying the chart facts first keeps astronomy/calculation separate from the symbolic layers that come next.

  5. Synthesis

No synthesis yet: this lesson deliberately locks the data layer first.

Interpretation

This separation is foundational: know what was calculated before deciding what it may mean.

Methodology sources

These are the main technical, historical or interpretive references used to verify the lesson. AstroOne behavior is cross-checked separately against the current implementation and verification checks.
